As discussed in a previous article, dark circles and under eye bags can be caused by thinning skin, poor circulation or poor drainage. As we age, subcutaneous fat loss results in an even more transparent surface, emphasising the appearance of under eye bags. A true solution has yet to be invented, but there are products out there that can improve their appearance and help keep them at bay. HydroPeptide’s Eye Authority impressed me from the very first use, but since I was looking for a cream that offered more than just temporary superficial effects, I remained skeptical until I’d used it for a longer period of time.

eye authority hydropeptide reviewThis eye cream has won over 30 beauty awards, including the international innovation award. Its short-term benefits are visible quickly, and are probably a result of the product’s optical tightening and brightening properties. It contains pearlescent powder which diffuses light and absorbs into the skin to create a soft luster around the eyes. Pearl Powder is naturally rich in amino acids and minerals, which boost the skin’s metabolism, tones skin pigmentation, helps reduce impurities and the appearance of redness and pores. In addition, licorice extract also enhances the skin’s natural brightness.

Peptides?

Eye Authority has a slight instant tightening effect, apparently thanks to the Matrixyl 3000 ™ lifting peptide cocktail, the Inyline ™ relaxing peptide, and Haloxyl ™, which helps reinforce and tone the eye area.

Peptides are chains of amino acids (the building blocks of protein), that supposedly promote cell growth and healing by helping to build different proteins within the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Most importantly, peptides are cell communicators, which signal to the skin to repair itself. In other words, it “tricks” the skin into thinking it’s broken down too much collagen.

Hydropeptide’s trademarked anti-puffiness peptide cocktail Eyeliss ™ supposedly decreases capillaries’ permeability, increases lymphatic circulation, firmness and elasticity, and decreases irritation and inflammation. Its Hesperidin, white tea and ginseng are also said to improve blood circulation.

The anti-dark circle peptide Eyeseryl ™ improves vascular permeability and also has decongestant properties (acts as an edema reducer) and prevents liquid from accumulating in the eyebag area. The black pearl peptide is claimed to have a direct effect on melanin production, decreasing pigmentation.

Next to this huge cocktail of peptides and ingredients with antioxidant properties (antioxidants supposedly help protect us from the damaging effects of free radicals), such as vitamin C, rosemary extract, pea extract, licorice root extract, shea butter extract, sweet almond extract, bearberry extract, white tea extract, passion flower extract, bamboo extract etc., Hydropeptide’s Eye Authority is highly moisturising thanks to its hyaluronic acid, shea butter and ceramides. Ceramide III and squalene work as lubricants that reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier and form barriers against moisture loss. High in the ingredient list, squalene is an excellent emollient that has antioxidant and immune-stimulating properties.

Even though more research on peptides is needed, this product seems to do the trick much much better than the myriad of eye creams and serums I’ve ever tried, and it has been agreed upon that they’re certainly great moisture binding agents.

I also love that it will last much longer thanks to it’s hygienic, air tight packaging, and that it applies smoothly and dries quickly, without leaving any icky white residue. Some people even use it as an eyelid makeup primer. After my first bottle ran empty, I tried to open it up in my desperation to recuperate some extra product, but the packaging is virtually unbreakable, and after throwing it around, I actually needed a hammer to get it open, and was pleasantly surprised (and a tad disappointed) to see the product was used up to the last drop, meaning the air tight pumping mechanism truly should be a staple for other brands. No wastage whatsoever.

In a nutshell, the Eye Authority didn’t exaggerate when choosing its name. It brightens, hydrates, lifts, and de-puffs with both short and long term benefits, at a reasonable price.

The fact that it’s free of artificial fragrance, parabens, phthalate and sulphates and that they don’t test on animals is yet another huge plus. To top it off, Hydropeptide supports charities such as Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness. Currently profits are also going towards building water-wells providing fresh water to developing countries in 2016.
